Using the cover of a cellphone store on Main Street, several City of Poughkeepsie residents have been accused of storing, selling and coordinating the sale of heroin, the U.S. Attorney's Office said today.
In a coordinated takedown Wednesday and into this morning, several law enforcement officers arrested and charged seven defendants, while another five were already in state custody on earlier charges. Eleven suspects, police are calling the "Fisher Organization," were indicted on charges of conspiracy to distribute heroin in and around Poughkeepsie after an 18-month investigation beginning January 2011. Another suspect was charged with distributing heroin.
Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in the release, "At first glance, the cellphone store ... looked like any other commercial establishment, but in fact, it was the epicenter of their dangerous, destructive, and potentially lethal heroin operation."
Bharara added thanks to police efforts, "the streets of Poughkeepsie will no longer be infected with their poison."
Court
The suspects will be arraigned in White Plains federal court this afternoon before U.S. Judge George Yanthis, including Shabari Fisher ("Sin") and Shateek Parker ("Ant"), who were the alleged leaders of the Fisher Organization.
Also to appear before the judge are: Garen Fisher, Shannon Walker, Tyrell Rudolph, Steven Williams, Rasheed Harrell, Carlos Reyes, Christian Parker, Vaughn McKinney and Gary Sessoms.
Tony Jarrett was charged with distribution and possession with the intent to distribute heroin.
They allegedly received calls on "the dispatch phones" from heroin customers and arranged sales in Poughkeepsie places, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. The drugs were marked with brands such as "True Religion," "Gucci," "Rated R," and "Red Bull."
Additional agencies involved included The New York office of the FBI, the City of Poughkeepsie police and the county Sheriff's Office.
A FBI team was seen removing several boxes out of the Boost Mobile store in the city then closed the store and left the scene around 1 p.m. today. The store, on the corner of Main and Catharine streets, also is called "Cell It!" according to a logo on the store entrance.
An unmarked car was parked on the sidewalk around 7 a.m. and police were tightly packed inside the small space for at least an hour before they pulled down the metal gates over the windows, obscuring the view of activities inside.
Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force, a coalition of regional and federal police, was also involved.
Boost Mobile is a brand of Sprint Nextel, as part of the Sprint Prepaid Group, the prepaid cellphone group.
The building at 341 Main St. is owned by the limited liability company Two Catherine Street. It's zoned as a commercial rental.
