Pennsylvania consumers have largely been treated to some of the best and most responsive banks in the country, due in large part to laws and an entrepreneurial spirit in the state which has led to the formation of major local and regional banks that remain committed to consumer satisfaction. Just such a bank was launched in 1864 in the state's western region in order to serve the residents of Hermitage. The town's population barely numbered more than 100 at the time, but the bank saw an opportunity and cornered the market for financial services in the town. It survived numerous financial panics over the course of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and eventually committed itself to statewide expansion during the middle part of the 20th century. Through a number of acquisitions across Pennsylvania and extreme eastern Ohio, the First National Bank Corporation, as it came to be known, transformed into one of the largest Pennsylvania local financial institutions. It remains committed to consumer services, even as it has diversified its portfolio to include tools for corporate and small business users who wish to use the bank's small-town approach to finance.
Company History:
The survival of the company which was founded in 1864 as the First National Bank of Hermitage was never guaranteed, especially given its founding during the final years of the American Civil War. The company nearly collapsed under the weight of three 20th century financial panics and economic downturns, as its extremely rural position and limited customer base made it exceptionally vulnerable. Smart management saved the bank's brand form extinction numerous times, until the company was placed into the Federal Deposit Insurance Program in 1934 alongside virtually every other financial institution in the United States.
With its newfound financial security, the bank began to slowly acquire its competitors throughout western Pennsylvania and extreme eastern portions of Ohio. These acquisitions all broadened the company's name, as each newly-owned bank was transitioned to the First National Bank of Hermitage for its consumer-facing operations. The number of acquisitions became so large by 1982 that shareholders voted to broaden the company's appeal by becoming the First National Bank of Pennsylvania, dropping the locality name that had characterized the bank's name since it's first two branches opened to the public. It was a largely appropriate move, given the bank's branches in all corners of the state by the mid-1980s.
Further changes in the bank's name and structure happened later in the decade, as it was decided that the bank would become part of a diversified financial services company and fall under the purview of that entity. This necessitated the formation of First National Bank Corporation of Pennsylvania, and it brought with it a number of new financial instruments to enhance future growth. The 1990s saw the bank adopt a wide array of business and investment services to cater to an entirely new demographic, even as it ramped up further bank acquisitions to broaden its number of branches in Pennsylvania.
By the 2000s, it became necessary to rebrand the company as simply FNB Corp, the leading local financial institution in the Keystone State. The bank began engaging in home lending products and other tools such as vehicle finance and personal lending, increasing its assets by more than a third in just under ten years.

1981: Two more Pennsylvania banks are purchased by the company
1982: First National Bank of Hermitage elects to change its consumer-facing branches to a new brand, given the name First National Bank of Pennsylvania
1984: The company's shareholders and executives elect to transform the bank into a diversified financial services corporation which will operate under the name First National Bank Corporation
